Programs and Services

The Department of Training and Development staff travel throughout the United States and Canada offering programs to members, stewards, officers, agents and staff. Since 1978, department staff have taught thousands of courses for Teamsters on a variety of topics ranging from grievance handling, organizing and bargaining to time management and strategic planning.

Teamsters Leadership Academy (TLA)

The Teamsters Leadership Academy was started in 1986. Held six to eight times a year at Teamsters Headquarters in Washington, D.C., this program brings Teamster officials from all over the U.S. and Canada to the nation's capital for four and one-half days of intensive training. TLA is also held regionally once or twice a year. We also offer a series of "short courses" on topics related to leadership and collective bargaining.

Staffing & Resources

The department continues to offer expert instructors from IBT, its affiliates and other organizations who can tailor their programs and material to the specific needs of each Teamster affiliate. We also refer local leaders to organizations and resources that best meet their collective bargaining, administrative and other needs. We share information with our local leaders on best strategies, from signing up new members and forming committees to running effective membership meetings.

Publications

The department's publications are being updated to reflect the new direction of our International Union.

Audio/Visual

The department has traditionally used a wide variety of training videos so that our labor education programs offer useful information in an interesting, memorable format. In the year ahead, we plan to produce some new videotapes and Power Point presentations that will further enhance the way we present new material.

Special Projects

We often coordinate special projects and work with other departments and/or divisions. For example, we played a supporting role in the Carhaul Contract Campaign by helping to organize a series of rallies and running a phone bank feature off the Carhaul Hotline in the final days of contract negotiations. You name it, the Department of Training and Development staff is ready and willing to help this union move ahead in the years to come.
