Resisting the Politics of Free Trade: Women Organizing for Labor Justice

STITCH Women’s Language School Delegation, Guatemala – May 28 to June 5, 2005

STITCH is pleased to announce this year’s language school delegation for union women. This delegation combines the opportunity to meet labor organizers from Central America, spend time with union women from the United States, and learn Spanish in a one-on-one setting.

In addition, STITCH delegation offers women advocates an in-depth look at the effects of free trade on women workers and unionists.

The participants will:

  • Connect with U.S. and Guatemalan women activists;

  • Study Spanish and learn about Central America;

  • Understand the importance of what “free” trade agreements mean for Central American workers; and

  • Meet pioneering organizers and learn how you can become part of the struggle for global economic justice.

Itinerary

Each morning will be spent learning Spanish one-on-one at a well-respected school in the colonial town of Antigua, Guatemala. In the afternoons, participants will meet women garment workers who are fighting for better conditions in their industry, activists working on global trade, and local union leaders. In the final days, the delegation will visit the banana plantations of Eastern Guatemala and meet the workers who have been affected by “free” trade policies.

Throughout the week, participants will get the opportunity to interact with regional union leaders in order to gain a broader understanding of globalization. Delegate members will learn more about what women are doing to fight back, and have a chance to improve their own organizing skills.

Cost

$800, which includes housing, meals, language instruction, and travel inside Guatemala. Participants must pay their own way to Guatemala City and cover any incidental costs (snacks, tips, etc.)

Who May Attend?

This delegation is open to women only.
