When temperatures soared to 110 degrees outside, more than 175 stewards were
inside learning how to increase their effectiveness at their work sites. Chris
Griswold, Local 986 Secretary-Treasurer and Mary Lou Salmeron, Local 986
President hosted a two-day conference for the stewards on August 2-4 in
Laughlin, Nevada.
Teamsters Department of Training and Development staff Sally
Payne, Iliana Flores and Claudia Galloway conducted workshop sessions on
grievance handling, building member participation and preparing for bargaining.
“I found the sessions helpful,” said Amy Leiti. “They really
gave me a better understanding of the duties as a steward.”
“The information is very helpful to inform the membership of
their rights and protection under the contract.,” said Gene Barnes, who is a
first-year steward.
The session kicked off with the Teamster history video which
relates the ongoing struggles of American workers to maintain a decent standard
of living. The heat outside was matched by the heat inside when the stewards
discussed important issues facing workers today. They realized that the fate of
future generations lies in the ability of workers to maintain a good standard of
living. The video showed everyone that when workers get together with a common
goal, they can make a difference.
“This seminar strengthened my belief in the union,” said
Wilmer Chavez. “And I have vital information that I will take back to my unit.”
