On June 14, 30 stewards attended a training seminar hosted
by Local 962 in Central Point, Oregon. The program focused on the many roles
stewards play in the workplace, including building membership participation.
"We are very pleased to offer you this training program,”
said Daniel Ratty, Local 962 Secretary-Treasurer as he welcomed the stewards.
“By attending today, you show your commitment to this union. Though your
commitment, we can make this union stronger and serve our members even better.
We appreciate your efforts.”
Bill Munger, Eastern Region Coordinator for the Teamsters
Training and Development Department, coordinated the event that covered a number
of topics, including an examination of the grievance process and the first step
meeting with the supervisor.
Jose Gasca from the Teamsters Department of Field Action
also provided a presentation on the importance of the DRIVE program and
encouraged the stewards to make sure their members are registered to vote.
“Everyone's contribution made the program a great success,”
Munger said. “I’m sure the program enhanced their skills in representing their
members.”
Steward Jared Twedell said the seminar provided him with new
information and skills. “I gained the confidence I needed to move forward,” he
said.
"The information in this class provided me with a good
foundation,” said steward Dion Christie. "Knowledge is power!”
The Teamsters Training and Development Department conducts
more than 100 programs each year for stewards as part of its commitment to
provide training for all levels of leadership within the union. Programs are
held at Teamsters Headquarters in Washington, D.C. and throughout the United
States and Canada.
