On June 7, Local 728 in Atlanta hosted a seminar for 25
stewards and a number of soon-to-be stewards from newly organized barns,
including UPS Freight and First Transit.
“You have a very important role. Your members look to you
for guidance, representation and leadership in the workplace,” said Randy Brown,
Local 728 President. “This training is essential, and we really appreciate you
taking time from your busy schedules to attend. It truly shows your commitment
to the union.”
Throughout the day, a number of topics were covered
including the steward’s role and responsibilities, how to determine and then
handle grievances effectively and Teamster history.
“This program was a tremendous success, thanks to everyone’s
contributions and participation,” said Iliana Flores, Southern Region Training
Coordinator for the Teamsters Training and Development Department, who
coordinated the event. “Hopefully, we will do many more successful training
programs with this group in the future."
The stewards enjoyed the program and are looking forward to
future sessions.
“I learned how to properly submit a grievance,” said Barry
Jackson. “Also, I gained information on rights as a steward, which is just as
important.”
“This training gave me a better idea of how to deal with
situations I encounter in my work as a union steward,” said Drew Stewart.
