The
International Union held a Teamsters Leadership Academy (TLA) for new business agents
in Washington, D.C., October 1-4. The Teamsters Training and Development
Department conducted the four-day training for the 45 participants who
represented local unions throughout the United States and Canada.
Drawing on the expertise of both International Union staff members and local
union leaders, the program covered the major areas of responsibility for
Teamster business agentsfrom organizing and bargaining to effective
representation. In addition, the training focused on many topics, including developing a
strong steward system, establishing office systems, Teamster history, the DRIVE
program and negotiating for benefits.
“As a new business agent, this course has given me the tools and a basic road
map to become a better labor relations provider to all members,” said
Darin Melnechenko, a business agent at Local 987 in Calgary.
The
participants also were given the opportunity to tour the International Union headquarters and meet
many of the staff of various departments who provide services to
Teamster affiliates.
“Not only did we learn skills that will help us help our members on a day-to-day
basis, but we also learned who to contact at the IBT if we need assistance
or additional information,” said Steven Jacobs, a business agent at Local 822 in
Norfolk, Virginia.
The
Training and Development Department will soon be sending each affiliate the 2008
calendar for the TLAs that will be
conducted in Washington, D.C. and various locations throughout the
country.
