Local 42 Hosts Stewards Seminar

October 24, 2006

On October 21, Local 42 in Lynn, Massachusetts hosted a successful steward's seminar. Participants reviewed the various roles they play in the workplace with particular emphasis placed on the grievance process.

The stewards participated in role-play scenarios in which the group divided into union and management teams and practiced presenting and resolving grievances during the first step of the grievance procedure.

Local 42 President Alice Riley-King opened the session and welcomed the stewards. "You are the backbone of our Union,” she said. “You are whom the members look to first for guidance, representation and leadership. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to enhance your representational knowledge - it shows a real commitment to your union and our members."

Steward Diane Palmisano said the seminar provided a productive way to proceed with the grievance process and "workshops like this continue to give me the confidence and incentive to be a leader and good example to the members of my unit."

Steward Michael Fortunato said, "The seminar was very useful in building my confidence in discipline hearings; to take control of the meeting and not be intimidated by the employer."

Kevin Bourassa, Local Chairman of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen Local Division 439 was also invited to the event. "I am very grateful to Local 42 for the invitation and opportunity to take part in this program - it gave me a better idea of my role and responsibilities," Kevin said.

"I was extremely impressed with the dedication and enthusiasm of the officers and stewards of Local Union 42. Everyone's contribution made the program a great success," said Bill Munger, Eastern Region Coordinator of the Teamsters Training and Development Department who conducted the all day program. "It's always inspiring when our local unions show their commitment to educating our members."

The Department of Training and Development conducts more than 100 workshops a year throughout the United States and Canada, as well at the International Union's headquarters in Washington, D.C.
